This has implications related to the Electronic Identification each and every TCP/IP data packet is tagged with, a number of software protection schemes also tag themselves to the Unique ID of a network card in an attempt to thwart piracy of the software application. Some ISP providers also use this serial number to prevent multiple computers from being connected to the network connection they provide. (which is why some routers have ‘spoof’ functionality enabling them to masquerade as the NIC of the computer)
There are a number of software utilities that allow the system calls that retrieve this number to be intercepted, thereby allowing the user to return a fake number associated with the device.
